Meet Dr. Clayton

Mark C. Clayton, DDS

Mark Clayton was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. Following graduation from Walbrook High School, he attended Howard University and received a B.S. degree in Zoology in 1982. He obtained his D.D.S. degree from Howard University College of Dentistry in 1990.

Immediately following dental school, he entered a residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Howard University Hospital which he finished in 1994. Upon completion of his training, Dr. Clayton received the Thomas J. Pinson Award—presented to the post graduate student who demonstrates the highest proficiency in oral surgery technique, scholastic achievement and overall clinical excellence.

After his residency, Dr. Clayton began four years of active duty in the United States Army, stationed at Fort Stewart in Hinesville, Georgia. While in the Army, he served as Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Winn Army Community Hospital. He completed his military service at Fort Stewart and received the Army Commendation Medal as a Major in the United States Army.

In December of 1998, he accepted an attending oral surgeon position at D.C. General Hospital training Howard University and Georgetown University residents. While at D.C. General he was promoted to the position of Director of Dental Ambulatory Anesthesia.

In 2002, Dr. Clayton returned to Hinesville, Georgia to start a private practice.

Dr. Clayton is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, a fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and a fellow of the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. His membership in other organizations include the Georgia Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Dental Association, the National Dental Association, the Georgia Dental Association, the Georgia Dental Society, the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, the Savannah Dental Society, the Southeastern Dental Society and the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. Dr. Clayton is a life member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity; in 2004 the Savannah Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi honored him as their Man of the Year. He is also a founding member of 100 Black Men, Savannah Chapter.

Dr. Clayton is a member of the Armstrong-Atlantic University Foundation Board of Trustees and the Atlantic Area CASA Board of Directors.

Dr. Clayton has one daughter, Susan. His interests include golf, Corvettes and playing the piano and guitar.
